My Plastic Heart Beats For You

Plastic is all around us, in some ways it is very obvious, from the plastic packaging that wraps our food, personal hygiene products, our plates and cooking utensils, kids toys and so many of the things that grant us convenience in our modern day lives. Some people even choose to have plastics implanted in their bodies. But the use of plastic in our everyday lives is even more pervasive, from our phone cases and the wires within our computers and TVs, to fabrics we wear that are weaved with plastic making it a near-constant interaction throughout the day.

Our extreme reliance on plastic has led to a crisis of microplastics that we are exposed to through air, food, and water, further increasing the frequency of contact. To reflect this I created a metal rib cage that is distorted as a physical representation of the many ways in which microplastics are causing unseen damage to our bodies. The plastic heart embedded within the rib cage is a stress ball which represents the stress that the thought of how inescapable these invisible plastics invading our bodies causes me.
